Hair Bleaching[edit | edit source]

The Ramseys initially denied that JonBenet's hair was dyed.

In 1997 Patsy's aunt Pam Paugh confirmed that Jonbenet's hair had been "lightened"[1] A former nanny said JonBenet herself had admitted her hair was dyed:

The former nanny says JonBenet’s hair was a light golden brown which suddenly turned platinum blond. 'I said to her, "So who’s dying your hair, JonBenet?" She was all goshed. "You’re not supposed to say anything about that." I said, ‘O.K., it will be our little secret.’ ”[2]

After denying it for many years, Patsy Ramsey admitted to dyeing JonBenet's hair:

Interviewer: Did you highlight her hair even? Or...
Patsy: Sure, yeah. I highlighted it gently to try to blend it a little bit. Yeah.[3]

In spite of this, John Ramsey continues to deny that JonBenet's hair was dyed, saying, "It's just not something we would do".[4]

Ramsey defense pundit Paula Woodward continues to deny that JonBenet's hair was dyed and claims "the blonde hair came naturally from the Ramsey side of the family" and says it "often turned blonde from the summer sun".

Patsy Ramsey also colored her own hair and told police she had colored her hair on Christmas afternoon, hours before the murder.[5]

Hair Curling[edit | edit source]

Patsy put JonBenet's hair in curlers for her pageants, often overnight.

Babysitter Suzanne Savage recounts being asked to put JonBenet to bed with curlers in her hair.

Patsy called me on December 1, the night of the Access Graphics Christmas party. She wanted me to sit with JonBenet and Burke. Patsy told me to make sure JonBenet kept her hair in rollers overnight. She had a pageant the next day. Now tell me—what kid wants to sleep in rollers?[6]

In 1998, Patsy Ramsey said that before pageants she was more likely to dress JonBenet in pajamas rather than a nightgown, because of her hair curlers:

I just don't remember making a big deal about taking one special nightgown to the pageants. I think more likely we took the little Jeannie pant thing because it would be—if she had her hair in curlers, you could step into it instead of pulling it over your head.

A set of heated hair curlers was on JonBenet's bathroom counter.
