The "zonked" narrative

The "zonked" narrative refers to the Ramseys' elaborate story of how JonBenet was put to bed on Christmas night. The name comes from the fact that Patsy Ramsey used the word "zonked" three times in her 1997 police interview, and once in her 1998 interview, to emphasize the notion that JonBenet was asleep when they arrived home.

Earlier Stories (Later Denied)[edit | edit source]

On day one, John Ramsey repeatedly told multiple police officers that he had read to both JonBenet and Burke Ramsey before putting them to bed. Patsy Ramsey was present during at least one of these conversations, and did not contradict John. A few days after the crime, in written answers to Linda Arndt's fax, the Ramseys again made no mention of Jonbenet being carried from the car asleep. In all of Burke Ramsey's known statements, he has made no mention of JonBenet being carried from the car asleep. In fact, in his 1998 interview, Burke stated that JonBenet had walked inside with the rest of the family, carrying Christmas presents.

"Zonked" Narrative[edit | edit source]

In April 1997, four months after the crime, John and Patsy Ramsey presented police with a new story. The basic narrative is that JonBenet fell asleep in the car while they were driving home from the Whites' party. John Ramsey claims he carried her into the house from the car, and JonBenet remained asleep. Patsy apparently went ahead of him to "turn the bed down". John Ramsey then apparently laid JonBenet on her bed and then left the room. Patsy Ramsey claims she then removed JonBenet's shoes, socks, and velvet jeans, while JonBenet lay on the bed, still asleep. Patsy claims she decided to leave JonBenet's party shirt on her. Patsy Ramsey claims she then searched through JonBenet's room but was unable to find her pajama pants, so she took a pair of boys' long johns from a drawer and put those on JonBenet, then proceeded to tuck JonBenet into bed. JonBenet apparently remained asleep throughout all of this. In later interviews Patsy claimed she "said her prayers over her", then left the room.
