Police Investigation[edit | edit source]

In June 1997, Gary Oliva's DNA was taken.

The Ramseys' paid private investigators, unhappy with the police investigation, continued to pitch Oliva as a suspect, making a media appearance in CBS in August 2002.

In 2003 Tom Bennett, the chief investigator for the District Attorney Mary Lacy, investigated Oliva again and specifically eliminated him as a suspect:

"A background examination of Gary Olivia [sic] and an interview with James Selby has offered proof these persons were not responsible for the death of JonBenet Ramsey, thus eliminating two persons high on the list of potential suspects." (October 21, 2003)[1]

Media and Tabloid Theories[edit | edit source]

In August 2002 The Ramseys' investigator Ollie Gray told CBS 48 Hours Investigates The interview with Oliva

In 2016, the Oliva theory resurfaced in Dylan Howard's tabloids The National Enquirer and Radar Online.

In 2019 the tabloids again claimed Oliva's confession was a "breakthrough" in the case. Dylan Howard again published stories about Oliva and the stories were taken up by British tabloid The Daily Mail. On January 10, 2019, the Boulder Police Department released a statement in response to the tabloid allegations:

"The Boulder Police Department is aware of Gary Oliva and has investigated his potential involvement in this case, including several previous confessions."[2]
